The Inspiring Journey of Commando Surendra Singh
Discover the Remarkable Life of Commando Surendra Singh, a Living Emblem of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan“
Surendra epitomizes the slogans of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer). Born in a Haryana village (Chhara) to a poor wheat farmer among three brothers, Commando Surendra Singh received his education in a local government school. “I was an average boy who enjoyed playing games,” Surendra reminisces. He excelled in basketball at the national level competitions.
“When I was young, my grandmother often told me stories about my grandfather,” Surendra recalls. “Surendra’s grandfather served in the Indian National Army.” The patriotic sentiments inspired Surendra to join the Indian Armed Forces at the age of 18 in 1997.

Commando Surendra Singh's Heroic Chronicles
Kargil to Mumbai, Surendra’s Journey in Service
Kargil and Mumbai
"I served in the army for 14 years and 3 years, 10 days," Surendra shares. Shortly after completing his training, Surendra was deployed in the frontline of Kargil in 1999.
"Warfare is a 24-hour job. There's no designated time for rest. Every moment is a gamble."
As a part of Operation Vijay, Surendra fought in the Kargil war for two months, but remained stationed in the region for 2 years. Surendra defended India from a potential Pakistani incursion during Operation Parakram (2001-2002). His military experiences include an overseas tour. Surendra was deployed for 14 months in Congo (Operation North Night Final) as a UN peacekeeper. Despite ten years of rigorous military service, Surendra narrowly escaped severe injuries.
By 2008, Surendra joined the National Security Guard, a specialized unit tackling terrorist activities to prevent states from internal disturbances. Surendra left his wife along with his son Pulkit.

Beyond the Call of Duty:
Surendra's Valor in Operation Black Tornado
The 26/11 Operation: Commando Surendra Singh's Unyielding Spirit
Commando Surendra Singh was undergoing treatment at the Army Hospital in Delhi. Medical assistance was provided from 2008 to 2011, at a point where the Army medical staff assessed that Commando Surendra Singh’s recovery would not be complete. “Until the end of 2010, the doctors were expecting that my recovery would be so successful that I could be fit for service, but by 2011, their assessment changed.” The medical team declared Commando Surendra Singh unfit for service medically. “That’s when problems started.” The medical staff denied Surendra’s treatment because his ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) card was confiscated.
Corruption denied him recognition from Kargil and his pension was withheld for the next 19 months after the 26/11 attacks, a promise that the Indian government makes to those soldiers who risk their lives so that the rest of us can continue to enjoy our freedom.
Commando Surendra Singh:
A Fearless Journey from Blind Believer to Political Hero
I wasn't believing what I was hearing. I knew my hearings were manipulated, but over these years, I was truly blind! A blind believer in the ideals of Indian democracy." One by one, many prominent political figures dismissed Commando Surendra Singh's claims. Even the Indian Army disavowed his claims. Despite disdain for politicians, inspired by the possibility of reform in the system, Commando Surendra Singh became a founding member of the Aam Aadmi Party. "My trials made me realize that the India I was fighting to defend existed only in my imagination. I joined you to help make that India a reality.
I never thought I would actually contest elections, but the party offered me a ticket for Delhi Cantonment. In electoral politics, the Bhartiya Janata Party's Karn Singh Tanwar had represented Delhi Cantonment 3 out of 4 times between 1993 and 2013. In 2013, Commando Surendra Singh defeated Tanwar by 355 votes (0.54% vote share). Sharing his thoughts, Commando Surendra Singh says, 'These rooted politicians are worth defeating.' At the beginning of this month, the Nav Bharat Times hailed, 'Dr. Harsh Vardhan Zero, Commando Surendra Singh Hero.' The paper positioned Commando Surendra Singh as a top-performing MLA in Delhi. 'I've started work worth 50 crores in my constituency.тАЛ
Transforming Delhi Cantonment:
    A Soldier's Legacy in Governance
Commando Surendra Singh’s Impact on Civic Administration and Public Welfare
In Delhi Cantonment, there are slightly different governing rules/structures as compared to the rest of Delhi’s electoral areas (as per the Cantonment Act of 2006). Being a legislator from Delhi Cantonment meant that Commando Surendra Singh held a position as a member of the Local Civic Body (NDMC), overseeing the administration and providing more political power for public activities. Apart from 4 crore MLALAD and NDMC resources, Surendra could also influence the 4 crore Delhi Cantonment Board.
In April 2014, Commando Surendra Singh assisted the Fire Brigade in extinguishing fire outbreaks in the Vivekanand Cluster. ‘I paid special attention to that area for the next 15 days until things normalized
Commando Surendra Singh organized more than 40 community meetings, addressing local issues such as water supply, conditions of government schools, poor sewer lines, and lacking toilet facilities. He added 50 beds to the Army hospital and even addressed waste management by procuring 100 bins for his electoral area.
I salute you as a soldier and a politician, Commando Surendra Singh, for your service to India according to your abilities. Just as we remember the lives we lost on 26/11, let’s pay tribute to those who risk their lives for our freedom.
