A Journey of Courage and Sacrifice:
The Story of Commando Surendra Singh

Introduction

Our story begins with Commando Surendra Singh, a dedicated soldier with a profound commitment to serving his nation. With a career spanning 14 years in the Indian Army and an additional 3 years in the National Security Guard, Surendra’s journey is a testament to his unwavering courage and sacrifice.

The Kargil Chronicles:

Surendra’s military journey took a significant turn when he was deployed to the frontline during the Kargil War in 1999. As part of Operation Vijay, he valiantly fought for two months, defending India from potential threats. The harsh realities of warfare taught him that every moment is a gamble, and there’s no designated time for rest.
His dedication to the nation didn’t end with Kargil. Operation Parakram (2001-2002) saw him standing guard against a potential Pakistani incursion. Surendra’s commitment extended beyond borders as he served as a UN peacekeeper in Congo for 14 months.

The 26/11 Operation:

In an act of unparalleled bravery, Commando Surendra Singh left his wife and newborn son Pulkit to join Operation Black Tornado during the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Dropped on the rooftop of the Taj Hotel, he faced a grenade blast that left him injured. Undeterred, Surendra neutralized two terrorists, saving the lives of 627 people.
Post-26/11, Surendra faced a different battleā€”a battle against corruption and bureaucracy. Despite his sacrifice, corruption denied him recognition for his service in Kargil, and his pension was withheld for 19 months. The same government that promises to honor those who risk their lives for our freedom seemed to forget his sacrifice.

The Aftermath:

Surendra’s journey took an unexpected turn when, despite his injuries, he was declared unfit for service medically. The denial of medical treatment due to bureaucratic issues added to his challenges. The struggles continued as his ECHS card was confiscated, and the promises made to soldiers like him seemed to fade away.

Conclusion:

Commando Surendra Singh’s story is not just one of a soldier; it’s a narrative of resilience, sacrifice, and the harsh realities faced by those who dedicate their lives to protect ours. His journey serves as a stark reminder of the challenges our armed forces endure, both on the battlefield and in the aftermath. As we honor heroes like Surendra, let us also reflect on the responsibility we bear as a society to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
